Despite several years of steady economic growth, 30% of the Ethiopian population still live below the poverty threshold, and the infant mortality rate is 44 deaths per 1000 births.
80% of the population rely on agriculture and livestock for their livelihood, and are seriously affected by climate change and recurrent droughts. 5.6 million people are today in a situation of food insecurity, as reported by the FAO.

VSF Germany is active in the Afar region and in South Omo. VSF Suisse is active in Somali region.

 

What we do:

 

  • Protecting livelihood assets from deterioration through creating access to veterinary services and fodder production and contribution to asset building through small ruminant restocking activity;
  • Enhancing access to safe and adequate water for human and animal consumption;
  • Improving sanitation and hygiene practices;
  • Strengthening communities’ Disaster Risk Management capacity;
  • Promoting nutrition-sensitive livestock systems;
  • Increasing employment opportunities, and better access to basic services.

Enhancing resilience against climate change-induced food insecurity of pastoralist & agro-pastoralist in Aura Woreda of Afar Region

Project duration: October 2016 – December 2021

Description:

The project targets 10 villages (kebeles) in Aura woreda (9 rural villages and Deraytu town – woreda capital). A total of 4950 Households (29.700 people) will be the direct beneficiaries of the intervention during the life time of the project. The target population belongs to the Afar ethnic group of which 76% are pastoralists and 24% are agro-pastoralists.
1800 pastoralists HHs will benefit from “livestock productivity component”, and 420 women will benefit from the “crop productivity” component. 50 women-headed HHs will benefit from improved nutritional status component and, 900 households will benefit from Primary animal health component. In addition, 400 households will benefit from diversified income generating schemes component and 400 households will benefit from DRR component.

Resilience Building for Sustainable Livelihoods& Transformation (RESULT) in South Omo cluster

Description:

The project aims at strengthening the resilience capacity of 10,869 targeted vulnerable pastoralists, agro-pastoralists and pastoralist dropouts in three target woredas of South Omo cluster through measures that will enhance livelihood productivity & income, increase employment opportunities, and improve access to basic services.

Expected results:

1. Increased access to sustainable basic services for pastoralist, agro-pastoralist and pastoral dropouts thereby reducing their vulnerability to external shocks.
2. Enhanced livelihood productivity and income, and diversification opportunities for 10,869 Households.
3. Improved Disaster Risk Management and capacity of pastoralist, agro pastoralist and other actors in the area.
