Presence in the country:
Guatemala is one of the most unequal countries in the world: despite being classified as middle-income country, it actually hides enormous disparities. 66.5% of poverty is found in rural areas, and mainly affects the indigenous populations, who are subject to very high levels of economic, social and political marginalization. Their major challenge is the control and access to their territories and natural resources (land, water, forests, biodiversity), that are encroached by aggressive extractive projects: agro-industrial, mining, hydroelectric plants ignoring the rights of indigenous local peoples.
AVSF is working in support of indigenous communities, to help ensure that their lands and natural resources are collectively managed in an efficient and sustainable way and that their rights are recognized and respected.
What we do:
- Supporting rural indigenous communities to defend their right to land, territory, and the right to food;
- Protection of the rights of indigenous peoples in the exercise of their self-determination, self-management of their territory and participation in decision-making on rural development;
- Diversification of agricultural production based through agroecology practices;
- Promoting community forest management and diversified agroforestry productio.
